North Shore sends 12 to Pan Am Games

A dozen athletes with ties to the North Shore will represent Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games running Oct. 14-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

A dozen athletes with ties to the North Shore will represent Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games running Oct. 14-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

According to the Canadian Olympic Committee's team list, these are the North Shore participants in the event:

- Rory Biskupski, West Vancouver, swimming

- Brenna MacLean, West Vancouver, swimming

- Rachel Riddell, West Vancouver, swimming

- Scott Richmond, North Vancouver, baseball

- Hannah Haughn, North Vancouver, field hockey

- Jesse Watson, North Vancouver, field hockey

- Scott Morgan, North Vancouver, gymnastics

- Eric Bevan, North Vancouver, rowing

- Kai Langerfield, North Vancouver, rowing

- Graeme Clendenan, North Vancouver, sailing

- Nikola Girke, West Vancouver, sailing

- Zac Plavsic, West Vancouver, sailing.

The 16th running of the games will once again feature elite athletes from North, Central and South America. The Games are an important proving ground for athletes gearing up for the 2012 Olympics to be held less than a year from now in London, England.

Canada's team will feature 493 athletes, the second largest for the country behind the 1999 games held in Winnipeg.

The games will feature 42 nations competing in 36 sports with 11 of those sports offering direct qualification for the 2012 Olympics. Canada finished fourth in the medals in 2007 behind the United States, Cuba and Brazil.
