Letter: I rode my BMX from North Van to Whistler to support men's mental health

It took James Hummell more than seven hours to ride to up the Sea to Sky Highway on a bike with no gears and no brakes

Dear Editor,

I wanted to take a moment to share something meaningful with you. In August I completed a 126.5-kilometre ride from North Vancouver to Whistler on my BMX bike, with no gears and no brakes.

It was both physically demanding and mentally challenging, but I chose to take it on as a way to raise awareness for men’s mental health.

Men’s mental health is an issue that too often goes unspoken. Many of us carry heavy struggles quietly, and I believe it’s important to break that silence and show that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Through this ride, I wanted to demonstrate resilience, perseverance and the importance of pushing through difficult moments, both on the road and in life.

I’m proud of this journey, but more importantly, I hope it can inspire conversations and encourage others to speak up, seek help and support one another.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for standing with me in supporting men’s mental health.

James Hummell
