A North Vancouver teen came home with a pair of medals from the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships held Aug. 8-10 in Calgary.

Callum Willliams, a 14-year-old Grade 8 student at Argyle Secondary and member of the NorWesters Track and Field Club, picked up silver and bronze medals at the national championship meet despite competing against older athletes in the U16 age group.

Williams showed his overall athleticism and skill by finishing second in the pentathlon, a five-event competition with athletes competing in 100-metre hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and 1,000-m run. The NorWesters athlete scored 3,031 points over the five events, finishing behind B.C.’s Nic Scarpino (3,146) and ahead of Newfoundland’s Crispen Hatendi (2,847).

Williams also earned bronze in triple jump with a top distance of 13.05 m.

This was the first national event for Williams, who earlier this summer won gold in triple jump and silver in long jump and pentathlon at the B.C. Athletics Outdoor Championships.
