THE Capilano Blues women's volleyball has scored some smashing victories to begin their season, winning the Thanksgiving Tournament held at Edmonton's Grant MacEwan University before coming home to open their regular season with a pair of emphatic wins.

The Blues played six matches in three days Oct. 7-9 and won them all, including a five-set thriller over the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in the championship final. Capilano dropped the first two sets against NAIT to put themselves in a deep hole bought the Blues clawed all the way back, winning the last three to claim the title with a 19-25, 21-25, 25-17, 2522, 15-12 victory.

Michelle Torresan led the attack for the Blues with a career-high 20 kills while middle blocker Alicia Catalano threw up seven stuff blocks and 10 kills. Team captain Ashley Cousens also chipped in on defence with six blocks while Kate Bilodeau and Jackie Caverly patrolled the backcourt, recording 26 and 23 digs, respectively.

The following weekend the Blues began their regular season with a pair of home wins over Columbia Bible College, dropping the Bearcats 3-0 in both matches.

Last season the Blues, coached by Wayne Desjardins who is entering his 13th season with the team, finished third at the provincial championships.

On the men's side Capilano struggles from last season - they finished a disappointing 3-11 and missed the playoffs - carried over to the opening matches of this season as the Blues dropped both of their matches against CBC. On Friday the Blues took the Bearcats the distance but lost in the fifth set before getting swept in three games on Saturday.

Both the men and women will be back on court at home this Friday and Saturday for a pair of matches against Douglas College. Game times both nights are 6 p.m. for the women with the men to follow at the Capilano Sportsplex.
