THE sport of wrestling may be in a fight for its life after the International Olympic Committee recently voted to remove it from the core Olympic program, but that didn't stop the North Shore's toughest grapplers from hitting the mat with full force at the 2013 B.C. High School Wrestling Championships held last weekend in Duncan.
Carson Graham's Cholena Horne led the way, winning the girls' 57-kilogram division while also earning the vote as the outstanding female wrestler at the provincial championships. The Grade 12 student went undefeated in her final two years of high school wrestling on her way to joining former Carson wrestlers Angela Lacey, Chris Lim and Dane Rive in winning an outstanding wrestler award at the championship meet.
Horne's strong showing helped the Eagles to a third-place showing in the girls' overall team competition.
Fellow 2013 provincial gold medal winners from North Shore schools include Carson Graham's Brandy Perry in the girls' 60-kg division, Sentinel's Adrienne Lu in the girls' 75-kg division, Oscar Bulaqui of St. Thomas Aquinas in the boys' 48kg division, Windsor's Dallan Bhatti in the boys' 63-kg division and Sentinel's Matt Cheung in the boys' 66-kg division.
Other medal winners from the North Shore circuit included Elphinstone's Alysha Monk who took home silver in the girls' 75-kg division and bronze medal winners Karah Bulaqui of STA in the girls' 40-kg division, Sentinel's Farah Taj in the girls' 51-kg division and Carson's Jeremy Sinclair in the boys' 66-kg division.
