Plavsic headed back to Olympic Games

WEST Vancouver's Zac Plavsic booked his ticket to the London Olympics earlier this month, finishing as the top Canadian at the World Windsurfing Championships in Cadiz, Spain.

Plavsic finished 16th overall at the World Championship to earn his second trip to the Olympic Games. In 2008 Plavsic finished 23rd in windsurfing at the Beijing Olympics.

This year's world championships were a blustery affair with high winds wreaking havoc on the schedule and the racers. With winds whipping up to 50 knots, the final two days of races were cancelled, replaced by speed trial sessions. Plavsic raced the speed trials on a borrowed board after winds and high speeds ripped up his sail.

"I am happy with qualifying but not happy with my results at the world championships," said Plavsic in an email to the North Shore News. "This will add to my fuel as I push forward in the coming months."

Plavsic started strongly in the event, finishing fourth in race No. 1, but could not break the top-10 the rest of the way. In race No. 9 Plavsic took a hard fall and finished in 35th spot. Though he placed 16th overall, his ranking for the Games bumps up to 12th because each country is only allowed to send one racer to the Olympics.
