WEST Vancouver's Helen Crofts was named the Red Lion Athlete of the Week in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the second time in a month following another strong performance for the Simon Fraser University indoor track and field team.
On Saturday Crofts shaved 1.18 seconds off her season-best time in the 800-metres at the University of Washington Husky Classic, finishing seventh at the meet in a time of 2: 07.34. Crofts already held the fastest time for an NCAA Div. 2 athlete in the 800 m this season.
Crofts followed that up with a strong 400-m race at the UW Indoor Open the next day, posting a time of 55.69 seconds - the 12th-fastest NCAA time of the season - in her first 400 m of the year. The time was a personal best for Crofts and was just 0.15 seconds behind the GNAC record.
Crofts and the rest of the Clan will head to Nampa, Idaho this weekend for the GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

North Vancouver's Scott Richmond was recently added to Canada's roster for the World Baseball Classic. Richmond was on the Canadian team during the 2009 event and scheduled to start in a key matchup against Venezuela but never got the chance to take the mound as the team was eliminated after an upset loss to Italy. The Classic runs March 2-19.
