Carson girls 2nd at rugby sevens provincials

CARSON Graham's girls team finished second at the 2012 B.C. Rugby high school provincial sevens championship held April 13-14 at the University of British Columbia's Thunderbird Stadium

The Eagles opened play on Day 1 with three straight victories, topping Robert Bateman 14-10, Mt. Boucherie 22-12 and Elgin Park 33-5 to finish first place in their pool.

On Day 2 Carson Graham scored a 24-0 quarterfinal win over Walnut Grove followed by a tough 15-12 semifinal victory over Cowichan to book a spot in the championship final.

The Eagles' run ended there, however, as Abbotsford Collegiate steamrolled to the title, knocking off Carson 370 in the final. Cup final MVP Lauren Arthur recorded three tries for Abbotsford, who outscored their opponent's 218-5 in the tournament.

The rugby sevens championship expanded to 15 teams this season after only five competed in last year's tournament. The sport has been added to the Olympic program for 2016.

Carson Graham's rugby girls have now turned their attention to the regular 15 a-side game with provincial championships in that sport scheduled for May 24-26 at West Vancouver's Klahanie Park.
