Capilano closes season with two Division 3 provincial rugby titles

CAPILANO Rugby Club teams won a pair of provincial titles during a day of championship rugby at the club's Klahanie Park facility last month. The club showed off its impressive depth in winning both the men's Division 3 Tier A and Div.

The club showed off its impressive depth in winning both the men's Division 3 Tier A and Div. 3 Tier B provincial finals.

At the Tier A level Capilano raced out to a 22-0 lead over the Brit Lions in the first half and then cruised the rest of the way, finishing with a 30-7 victory. Santiago Luna scored a pair of tries for the Caps while Andrew Crandell, Graham Buckler and Tristan Barnett added singles. Greg Thorburn notched a pair of converts while Tim Adair rounded out the scoring with a penalty kick. The win completed a perfect 8-0 season for the Div. 3 Tier A team.

Things were closer for Capilano's Div. 3 Tier B team as they battled Abbotsford RFC to a 7-7 tie in the first half of their final. The Caps broke the game wide open in the second half with three tries to take a commanding lead, setting up a 27-12 win. Capilano's Colton Webster, Dante Samiarelli, Matt Lee and Daniel Hickey touched down for tries in the match while Chad Carlsen kicked two conversions and a penalty.

In other action at Klahanie, reigning Div. 1 champs Vancouver Rowing Club successfully defending their provincial title, beating Abbotsford 31-27. in a championship thriller that changed leads four times. The Rowers found themselves down 12-10 at the half but jumped out to a 24-15 lead in the second frame and managed to hold off a resilient young Abbotsford lineup for the win.

Abbotsford finally got their win in the Div. 2 final, beating the Surrey Beavers 36-26.

Capilano's elite men's team and Div. 1 team both lost in the provincial semifinals.

North Shore rugby coach Rameses Langston was recently named as B.C. Rugby's 2012 winner of the Gerald McGavin Coaching Award.

The award will give Langston an opportunity to spend two weeks in New Zealand learning more about the sport with the Wellington Rugby Football Union. Langston coached for both Carson Graham secondary and the Capilano Rugby Club before taking a position with the varsity team at the University of British Columbia. He is also involved with Rugby Canada's under-17 program.

Eleven-year-old divers Alison Komlos and Makayla MacKinnon, both of West Vancouver, have qualified for junior nationals after podium finishes on both the one-metre and three-metre boards at the 2013 Summer Provincials in Victoria, May 31-June 2.

Komlos and MacKinnon train with the North Shore Dolphins, a springboard diving club that operates out of the West Vancouver Aquatic Centre. Komlos will be defending her spot on the junior national team that she earned after winning silver on the three-metre board at the 2012 junior nationals. The 2013 Speedo Junior Development National Championships will take place Aug. 3-4 in Calgary.
