North Vancouver RCMP are investigating a collision that sent a cyclist to hospital with serious injuries Saturday morning.
The collision happened on Capilano Road and Montroyal Boulevard just after 11 a.m. Police say a man on a bike and the driver of a grey 2010 Ford Escape were both travelling southbound, parallel to each other, and made contact, leaving the cyclist injured.
“It’s not clear as to how the collision occurred, but it looks like there was contact made between the two,” said Cpl. Mansoor Sahak, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP.
The cyclist was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition, said paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites.
Two ambulances were sent to the scene, where paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to the patient before transporting him to hospital.
Sahak said the driver remained on scene and is co-operating with police during the investigation. Impairment is not a factor, he added.
Saturday’s collision came one day after a 16-year-old girl was sent to hospital in serious condition on Friday, Aug. 30. Local Mounties say the teen was allegedly struck in a crosswalk by the driver of a Ford Transit van in the 700 block of Lynn Valley Road southbound near the Highway 1 on-ramp just before 4 p.m.
With the two collisions over the long weekend and fall season around the corner, police are reminding the public to keep an extra eye out for pedestrians and cyclists.
“We’re approaching fall, so it’s going to be darker earlier,” Sahak said. “[Motor vehicle incidents] typically do increase during the darker seasons."
Now is a perfect time to stay vigilant and keep an extra eye out for pedestrians, students, cyclists and other vulnerable road users, he said.
“We’re not pointing fingers at anyone in particular," he said. "It’s really a collective effort between everybody to keep everybody safe on the road.”
