IN a cruelly ironic turn of events last week, one of the police officers taking part in this week's Cops for Cancer fundraiser has had his bike stolen in West Vancouver.

The unidentified off-duty Mountie was shopping in Park Royal Thursday when a thief cut the $1,800 bicycle from a rack mounted on his car, according to West Vancouver police.

The high-end Gary Fisher road bike had been loaned to the officer while he trained for the 900-kilometre charity event, organized by the Canadian Cancer Society as a way to raise money to fight childhood cancers.

Police expect a replacement to be found before the tour begins Sept. 19.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the WVPD.
