Older adults won’t be limited on things to do during Seniors Week across the North Shore.
BC Seniors Week celebrates the elderly and their contributions, but also the role they play in our communities. Every year, Seniors Week is held in the first week of June.
Here is a rundown of some events and activities happening in North Vancouver and West Van.
Monday, June 2 - Beginner and intermediate Tai Chi
The Mollie Nye House holds weekly beginner and intermediate Tai Chi classes every Monday morning. People can sign up for the starter class learning beginner Tai Chi forms and movements to improve balance, strength and flexibility, while also improving memory and mental focus. The intermediate class expands on the basics, exploring various Yang Style Tai Chi forms.
Both class levels begin June 2 and run weekly until June 23. The beginner class runs from 9:50 to 10:40 a.m. and the intermediate class from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. People interested in the classes can register through the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture website.
Tuesday, June 3 - Seniors line dancing
Capilano Community Services offers weekly, drop-in seniors line dancing classes for a fun and easy workout. Classes take place every Tuesday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. at Lions Gate Community Recreation Centre in North Vancouver.
The cost of the dancing fun is by donation, and people can email [email protected] if they have questions about the weekly workout.
Wednesday, June 4 - Drop in ukulele session
Are you an experienced or beginner ukulele star? Want to show off your skills playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" or other classics? North Shore Neighbourhood House is offering a new ukulele drop-in program for seniors of all levels to have fun and play the four stringed instrument.
The weekly drop in is every Wednesday until June 25 from 1 to 2:45 p.m. inside the Anchor Room at North Shore Neighbourhood House (145 West First Street, North Vancouver). Admission is $2.
Thursday, June 5 - Bingo at Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre
Want a cheap activity to do? Bingo at Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre might be one a good one to try.
Bingo goers 19 and older can play the number game Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. People can play all 21 games for just $8.50 or purchase more cards if people would like to play more cards per game. Card sales begin at noon and close at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Friday, June 6 - North Shore Seniors’ Health Expo
The free annual North Shore Seniors’ Health Expo returns to West Vancouver, providing useful information to seniors, family members and caregivers. The expo will have over 50 exhibitors, speakers and researchers sharing insight into different aspects of well-being, including social, financial, physical and cognitive.
The expo will be at the Seniors Activity Centre at 695 21st Street in West Vancouver and the West Vancouver Community Centre (2121 Marine Drive, West Vancouver) from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 7 - Drop in coached table tennis
Players of all skill levels can take in the fun of table tennis at a drop-in session at the Seniors’ Activity Centre in West Vancouver Saturday afternoon.
On top of having fun, people will have the guidance of an experienced coach teaching players tips and techniques to enhance and better your skills. Members of the centre pay $3.25 while non-members pay $4.00. Registration is online.
Sunday, June 8 - Bridge and cribbage drop ins
The Seniors’ Activity Centre in West Vancouver holds weekly bridge and cribbage game drop ins for those 55 and older.
Drop ins for bridge happen every Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon and cribbage from 1 to 3 p.m. and people are encouraged to bring a friend or partner to both games. The games cost only $2.85 to play, making it a cheap activity to enjoy with new friends or close ones.
People can contact the Seniors’ Activity Centre during business hours for registration information.
