Time Traveller: Do you recognize this North Vancouver pedestrian overpass?

It was built in 1965 as part of a new North Van recreation centre, a facility that was later renamed after famed sprinter Harry Jerome

In 1963 the North Vancouver Centennial Committee recommended the construction of a new recreation facility at 23rd Street and Lonsdale Avenue. Sent to referendum as a joint centennial project, the plans were approved wholeheartedly by voters in both the city and district.

This photo shows the building of the overpass over 23rd Street as part of the construction of the project which took place over the course of 1965. The facility officially opened in March 1966, with a formal ball officiated by Lt.-Gen. George Pearkes marking the occasion.

In 2001 the facility was renamed the Harry Jerome Recreation Centre.
