A motorcyclist was flown to hospital in critical condition Sunday after he was struck and pinned under a moving van in West Vancouver.

The man was riding in the 5600-block of Marine Drive just before noon when he collided with the five-tonne truck, falling underneath it and getting dragged for some distance, according to firefighters. When the vehicle came to a stop, the victim was pinned under one of the wheels.

A witness came to the man's aid, tending to his injuries until West Vancouver fire crews reached the scene. Firefighters used airbags to raise the truck off the victim, untangled him from the drive shaft and extracted him from the wreck. Although he had suffered traumatic injuries in the crash, he was reportedly conscious and speaking to rescuers.

The man was rushed to a field at Eagle Harbour, where a waiting helicopter flew him to Vancouver General Hospital. He was still listed in critical condition late Sunday.

The man's name has not been released.

Police are investigating the collision.
