In the Community

The following is a selection of volunteer opportunities from various community organizations, made available through Volunteer North Shore, a service of North Shore Community Resources Society.

Last April, Bob Turner took a five-day kayak trip up Howe Sound during the first good weather of spring. He ran into an "astonishing number" of sea lions on his trip and decided to film a documentary on them.

West Bay Elementary School student Lauren Merrick along with fellow students decorated the bowling greens of the West Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club with poppies and flags to commemorate Remembrance Day.

To commemorate their 40th anniversary, the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund celebrated by hosting more than 40 Lower Mainland firefighters on Oct. 3 at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park – a major sponsor of the Burn Fund since 2007.

Sheryl Rasmussen sews satchels which will be sold at West Vancouver’s Ferry Building Gallery during the Great Gifts show, Nov. 16 to Dec. 16. Artists and artisans like Rasmussen will have their wares available prior to the holiday season.

Xerius Mavalvala, Mackenzie Brooks and Aleko Roumeliotis are among the Lynnmour Elementary intermediate students who created 96 ceramic poppies representing 96 B.C. soldiers killed on the same day – April, 9, 1917 – at Vimy Ridge.
