This column is dedicated to celebrating outdoor recreation in the Seymour area. Whether you are an adrenaline junkie or a Sunday afternoon ambler, there’s a slice of nature waiting for you to discover in Deep Cove.

I wish I could remove this shirt. Sometimes it’s heavy and weighs me down; other days it makes me feel unique. For the most part, it dictates where I walk, who I speak to, and the people I’m friends with.

We’re fortunate here in the Deep Cove and Seymour area to have a community paper to call our own. When residents flip through the Crier we want them to see familiar faces.

Changes are afoot in Maplewood Village, which is identified in our official community plan as one of the network of connected town and village centres where we’re focusing future growth.

Sporting a standard issue Mt. Seymour fleece, Alex Douglas is bent over shovelling snow outside the rental shop on a bluebird day in late January.

Recently, a tugboat carrying hundreds of thousands of litres of diesel fuel ran aground in Bella Bella. The resulting fuel spill has been a disaster for the local marine environment and the residents in the area.

For the past several years I have chaired the B.C. Municipal Climate Leadership Council, a group of mayors and councillors from across the province working on moving climate change action forward as good public policy.

Our hearts were created to be filled with rising hope. For each of us in this new year 2017, hope is a choice.

In North Vancouver, preserving our natural spaces and protecting the environment for future generations is always top of mind, and so is being financially responsible in our decision-making and operations.
