Tony Sun truly believes that absolutely anyone can enjoy an eBike.
After ten-plus years in business and thousands of life-long customers, it’s a belief that is most certainly standing the test of time.
Since opening up shop on the North Shore in 2019, Reckless Shipyards eBikes has helped countless clients from across Metro Vancouver to unlock the unbridled joy and freedom that can only come by way of two wheels.
And behind it all comes a promise of unrelentingly friendly service.
“We’re not of the mindset to sell you something as soon as you walk in the door, we try to solve problems and make your life better,” explains Sun, who serves as the shop’s owner and managing partner. “It’s about smiling and having a positive attitude. We’ll be happy when we see the customer happy.”
Aligned around the themes of fun, fitness and freedom, Sun and his partners leave no stone unturned to ensure a customer’s happiness.
To that end, Sun doesn’t overburden customers with overly complex details, nor intimidating sales tactics – instead, this is an atmosphere that’s fun and informative.
And while eBikes are Sun’s specialty, he also offers pedal bikes, rentals, service, skis, accessories and top-to-bottom consultation services.
It’s perhaps in the consultation phase that Sun’s passion for cycling shines through the most. He’ll ride alongside his customers for upwards of eight to 10 kilometres to determine the size, feel and fit of the eBike that will best suit their needs.
Some clients want to be offroad, some want a commuter. Others need a means to get up and down the North Shore’s many hills, while another segment of Sun’s clientele use eBikes as a way for their family to bond around exercise and being outside.
“Hills are a huge source of hesitation for a lot of people who want to move around and it can be a real deal breaker, but I show them how we can work around that,” Sun explains. “There is a real desire to have an efficient way of getting around to avoid traffic, but it’s also a very economical method of transport that is efficient, fun and stress free.”
Sun’s commitment to a stress-free eBike purchase extends beyond the initial purchase date and comes with complimentary tune-up service, courtesy loaner and endless expert advice on cycling safety.
While it might not seem intuitive at first, not having those all-important checkups in place is akin to buying a car without any service agreements or not getting routine oil changes.
“I understand that people are hesitant because they don’t want to walk out of the shop with a $100 bill, but what they’re doing is delaying important servicing and that is less than ideal,” Sun says. “Safety is our priority, along with your pleasure on the bike.”
And while Sun knows that no two cyclists are the same, he is bound to them all by one unifying purpose.
“We really enjoy building life-long relationships, because that builds a good business and a good community,” Sun says.
