Poll: Majority of respondents don't want more protected bike lanes

More than a third of readers voted for more dedicated lanes separated from vehicle traffic

As cyclists on the North Shore continue to be seriously injured in road collisions – some of which result in death – advocates are calling for safer infrastructure.

A big part of that involves a call for more protected, and continuous, bike lanes. But not everyone agrees that this work should be done. On the contrary, the majority of readers in a recent survey said that the North Shore doesn't need more protected bike lanes (52 per cent). More than a third of readers said that there should be more protected infrastructure (38 per cent), while one in 10 readers were indifferent.

The North Shore News polled 1,292 North Shore News readers and asked the question: Do we need more protected bike lanes on the North Shore?

The poll ran from March 24 to April 4, 2023. Of the 1,292 votes, we can determine that 500 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Indifferent 8.80 % local, 9.98 % total
No 49.60 % local, 51.78 % total
Yes 41.60 % local, 38.24 % total

Results are based on an online study of adult North Shore News readers that are located in North Shore. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 2.72%, 19 times out of 20.
