Letter: If West Van is looking to build a new arts centre, Klee Wyck should be back in the mix

Dear Editor:

I am not sure that many residents of West Vancouver are aware of the fact that our council is considering building a new arts and cultural centre at a [projected] cost of $38 million, as well as annual operating costs.

They have hired at tremendous cost an independent firm to do site location analysis for same and have even narrowed their site choices down to two specific locations without any input from West Van taxpayers.

The restoration of the 6.2-acre Klee Wyck Park in West Van has been ignored by council for well over 20 years but has been nixed by council as a potential site for the new centre for no good reason. Dr. Ethlyn Trapp, who donated the Klee Wyck lands to the District of West Vancouver, wanted the land to be used as an arts and cultural site, so why not -- as the saying goes -- “kill two birds with one stone?”

It’s time we as taxpayers were brought into the loop seeing as how we will be footing this huge bill.
