Dear editor:

Re: Jan. 1 Mailbox letter: New Shipyards neighbourhood has a dog poo problem.

The letter to the editor about the threat to human health from feces left spread on all matter of grounds, because dog owners and walkers allow and encourage the animals to urinate and defecate anywhere – this needs to be stopped, as it is not only a problem in Lower Lonsdale, it is everywhere!

The city currently does not enforce any of its bylaws related to parks requirements and animal control.

A great example of the lack of enforcement of the bylaws is right beside the RCMP building, in the Stella Jo Dean Plaza, which is now a sacred site for missing women. Dog owners take their dogs there for the purpose of defecating and urinating in that park and in the flower beds surrounding that park. There are “Dogs Prohibited” signs on all four sides.

Owners actually lift their dogs into the gardens for them to defecate and urinate. This area is now an animal toilet.

This threat to the health and safety of all citizens can be eliminated. It is very simple.

Effective immediately after city council does its required duty to protect its citizens by creating the necessary bylaws, all owners should be required to train their animals to defecate and urinate in and/or on the owner’s home, property or vehicle.

Any owner allowing their animal to defecate or urinate on other private or public property will receive a fine of a substantial amount that can be used by animal owners to receive training for their animals to re-direct their waste habits.

This is a serious problem. I believe council has the urge, now just let it happen!
