LETTER: Chorus of four is now a familiar song

Dear Editor:

I could do no more than shake my head in quiet resignation upon reading the latest tale of (over-) development in the City of North Vancouver (Victoria Park to Get New Condo Rentals, Jan. 23 news story).

Here we go again, and it’s a familiar and now seemingly endless song.

According to the story, concerned citizens speaking out were 100 per cent unanimous in condemning the application for this redevelopment, for a variety of valid reasons.

Yet it passed with a 4-3 vote — the same chorus of four (councillors) in favour one can now expect with clockwork accuracy in these matters. This means that the only concerns taken heed of were not those of area residents (ie. taxpayers), but once again those of the applicant, or developer.

In the last municipal election, there was great opportunity to slow this ever-rising tide of somewhat inexplicable obsession with densification, all else be damned. Instead, the voters somehow, amidst growing and vocal disdain for this trend, managed to make the situation exponentially worse.

Congratulations, majority of North Vancouver City electorate. Enjoy the next four years, and beyond.

By then it will really be too late. I have yet to figure out why the term “OCP” is constantly thrown around, nor why zoning for development even exists any longer. Ask and ye shall receive, don’t bother us with the details.
