Voters showing up at wrong Delbrook rec centre

A lack of creativity in naming community centres is sending some West Vancouver-Capilano voters to the wrong place to cast ballots.

Advance voting began across B.C. Thursday. Official notices from Elections BC direct voters in the North Vancouver portion of the riding to the Delbrook Community Centre – North Building at 600 West Queens Rd. Except some people have been showing up to vote at the newer and almost identically named Delbrook Community Recreation Centre at 851 West Queens Rd – about 400 metres to the west.

North Van Recreation and Culture staff at the (actual) rec centre have been redirecting confused voters to the proper location, two blocks away.

“We’ve put up a big whiteboard outside that indicates to go back to the correct address,” said Anne Rogers, spokeswoman for North Van rec.

Elections BC says it will be adding signs of its own.

When District of North Vancouver council debated what to name the replacement for the William Griffin Recreation Centre in 2015, they opted for Delbrook, despite that name still being in use for community facilities on the site of the former Delbrook High School.

Advance voting runs until Wednesday, Oct. 21. Click here for a map of advance voting places across the North Shore.
