NORTH Vancouver's Eugene Wong placed third at the NCAA's Pac-12 golf championships on the weekend, helping the Oregon Ducks to a second-place finish in the team competition.

Wong shot nine-under par 279 in the four round event - held at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore. - to finish in a tie for third place with USC's Sam Smith. Wong, a senior, finished four strokes behind champion Andrew Yun from Stanford and two strokes behind teammate Daniel Miernicki.

With Wong and Miernicki leading the way, the Ducks came within a stroke of winning their first-ever Pac-12 team title. Oregon and California finished with identical 12-under par scores through four rounds of play but California went on to claim the championship on the second playoff hole.

The Ducks will now wait to find out where they will be heading for regional championship play. Tournaments will be held at six locations across the united States May 17-19. The top-5 teams from each regional will then advance to the NCAA championships beginning May 29 at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.

Wong is winding down a very successful career with the Ducks. He was named the NCAA men's player of the midseason earlier this season after posting three top-10 finishes in October, including a win at the University of California's Alister MacKenzie Invitational where he set the tournament record. As a sophomore Wong was named winner of the Jack Nicklaus Award as the top golfer in NCAA Div. 1 golf.
