A North Shore Winter Club alumnus scored a pair of goals and was named first star as the struggling Carolina Hurricanes notched a big 4-3 home win over the Vancouver Canucks Thursday.

Drayson Bowman, a minor-league call-up playing in just his fourth NHL game of the season, lit up the Canucks with goals in the second and third periods to help the 29th-place Hurricanes come back from a 0-2 deficit. His first goal got Carolina on the board while his second in the first minute of the third period gave the Hurricanes their first lead of the night. They were the first two goals of the year for Bowman and only the third and fourth of his career in 36 NHL games.

Bowman played on a line with Eric Staal for much of the game and made the most of his opportunities.

"It was fun to play with Eric Staal," he said. "It was kind of the game that I've been used to playing throughout my career, and it feels good to finally do it at this level."

Bowman, born in Michigan and raised in Colorado, moved to Vancouver with his family when he was 14 so he could play minor hockey in the Winter Club's system. He went on the play in the WHL for the Spokane Chiefs and was drafted by Carolina in the third round in 2007.

North Vancouver's Eugene Wong was named the NCAA men's player of the midseason by Golf World Magazine after his scorching start to the 2011-12 season with the Oregon Ducks.

Wong posted three top10 finishes, including a win at the University of California's Alister MacKenzie Invitational where he set the tournament record. The senior, winner of the Jack Nicklaus award as the NCAA's top golfer in his junior year, leads the country in scoring average at 68.5 so far this season.

Wong's strong play helped Oregon win three of their four fall tournaments to reach No. 2 in the national rankings heading into the holiday break. The team's next tournament is the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii Feb. 1-3.
