CANADA'S top wheelchair basketball players, headlined by West Vancouver's Janet McLachlan, will be at the Richmond Olympic Oval this weekend for the 2012 National Championships.
The action will play out Friday to Sunday with 25 games played on two courts. The tournament provides an opportunity to see the hoops stars up close before they head off to play in one of the marquee sports at this summer's Paralympic Games in London. McLachlan helped lead Canada to a fifth-place finish at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.
Team British Columbia is the five-time defending national champions, and will look to match a team record of six consecutive championships, originally set between 1978 and 1983. With 21 victories, Team B.C. is the most successful squad in the tournament's 45year history.
The 2012 National Championships will celebrate the theme of "Difference Makers" in honour of Rick Hansen and the 25th anniversary of the Man in Motion World Tour. The 25th Anniversary Relay will make its way to the Oval on Sunday for a celebration following the championship games.
Play starts Friday at 10 a.m. with the women's championship game scheduled for 12: 15 p.m. on Sunday with the men following at 2: 15 p.m.
