Greater Vancouver Canucks vs Greater Vancouver Avalanche

On the night of Tuesday January 17th, North Vancouvers Karen Magnussen Arena was the setting for round robin play in the 2012 Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Associations Midget Scholarship Hockey Tournament as the Greater Vancouver Canucks hosted the Vancouver Avalanche.

Players were selected from local midget hockey teams based on their academic standings, skill and sportsmanship.

The Canucks featured 7 North Shore players on their roster and both teams were undefeated so far.

North Vans Justin McClelland started in net for the Canucks.

While the Avalanche called on Burnabys Matt Santorelli.

The shots came fast and furious and both keepers had to be sharp.

The Canucks pressed in the early going and were rewarded with a goal off a blistering shot by Lucas Conway from Squamish.

The Avs fought back as the period progressed and outshot the Canucks 16-14 but McClelland was steady and it was 1-0 Canucks at the end of the first.

The Avalanche carried that momentum into the second and struck back with the equalizer on a pass from Eric Mattson to Burnabys Tanner Gattinger.

The Canucks kept up the attack.

But the Avs went ahead on some hard work in front of the net by Eric Mattson from South Delta.

The Canucks tied it when North Vans Colin Weeks was Johnny on the spot in the slot.

But the Avs answered on a goal by Burnabys Luke Alexander.

Then the visitors came in on a 2-1 but were denied on the poke check by Canucks Alex Vidic

Shots on goal totalled 32-25 for the Avs and they led 3-2 after two.

In the third the Canucks re-grouped and tied it up early on a goal by North Vans John Dickie.

Then took a one goal lead on a cheeky wrap around by Lucas Conway for his second of the game.

Then the Avs went down a man on a hooking penalty to Brennan Bifano.

The Canucks cashed it in with a power play tally by Hollyburns Chris Nakamura to extend their lead to 2.

Mid way through the third, the home side went down a man off a slashing call to Steven Craig.

The Avs countered with a goal by Burnabys Marco Romano to pull within one.

In the dying seconds and down a goal the Avs went with the extra attacker as the Canucks were called for icing.

Off the faceoff, Manny Para just Googled one out of the zone and found the empty net with 1 second left in the game.

At the post game, Avs Tanner Gattinger of Burnaby received player of the game honours while North Vancouvers John Dickie got the nod for the Canucks.

Final score Greater Vancouver Canucks 6, Greater Vancouver Avalanche 4. The Canucks kept their unbeaten streak alive.
