Track star earns provincial award

NorWesters Track and Field Club athlete Kristen Schulz was awarded a 2015 B.C. Athletics Award in the Midget 15 age group in triple jump.

Schulz was recognized for having made or exceeded the "standard" of 10.9 metres for triple jump in the province, which she did seven times this season, with her personal best at 11.43 metres, according to a press release from the North Shore-based club.

Schulz was recognized at the B.C. Athletics Annual Awards Ceremony in Richmond Dec. 5. Schulz is in her second year of training under Elena Voloshin and has had an outstanding year with a series of triple wins in her triple jump event.

She won gold medals at both provincial events - a B.C. high school track and field meet in June and the provincial Jamboree in July - and she capped off her season with a gold medal at the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Quebec in August.

Schulz competed in Quebec as a member of the B.C. team, and had a series of spectacular jumps, with her winning jump of 11.41 metres.

Her next closest competitor jumped 10.89 metres. Schulz is currently ranked No. 1 in triple jump in both B.C. and Canada.

At nationals, Schulz was also a part of the bronze medal B.C. 4x100-metre relay team.

She also competes in long jump and won a silver medal in long jump at the provincial Jamboree.

Schulz trains four times a week, rain or shine.

Her goal is to win the provincials and nationals again in 2016 and compete at the World Youth meet in the near future.
