Swette headed to Jr. World Ski Championships

Butterworth earns GNAC honour

NORTH Vancouver's Ford Swette was one of 12 skiers recently picked to represent Canada at the 2012 FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships scheduled for Roccaraso, Italy Feb. 29-March 9.

This will be Swette's first appearance at the world juniors where he will race against skiers representing more than 60 countries. Men's team head coach Jean-Françis Bélisle said most of the Canadian skiers lack top-class international experience so they will be going to Italy to get a feel for the event. Next year's junior worlds will take place at MontSainteAnne and Le Massif in Quebec.

"It's going to be their first experience at world juniors," said Bélisle. "The expectations are not as high and we are mostly investing in their short-to long-term development, giving them exposure at the international level and preparing them for next year."

. . . North Vancouver's Lindsey Butterworth was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference athlete of the week after running the sixth fastest 800-metre time in GNAC history last weekend.

The Simon Fraser University student finished 12th at the Husky Classic, hosted by the NCAA's University of Washington, in a time of 2: 11.03.

"This is a great honour," said Butterworth in an SFU release. "I'm fortunate to have great training partners that I have been working with for a long time now which is helping me be successful. I just really feel ready for the GNAC meet this weekend and I'm looking forward to the outdoor season."

Butterworth and the Clan will wrap up the indoor season this weekend in Idaho as they compete at the GNAC Indoor Championships.

"Lindsey is amazing," said SFU head coach Brit Townsend. "She has really impressed with her attitude and work ethic. She never hesitates to take on an extra event for the team which she'll be doing at the conference meet in Idaho this weekend. She is such a super competitor with a great drive to improve."

. . . North Vancouver's Cole Penman recently committed to play for the University of Carleton men's basketball team next season, joining what is inarguably the most successful basketball program in Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

Penman attended Sutherland secondary until Grade 9 when he moved to Vancouver College where he is now a star with the powerful Fighting Irish. Last year Penman was a starter for the provincial under-17 team, leading the squad to a bronze-medal showing at the national championships.

The Carleton Ravens are currently ranked No. 1 in Canada and have won seven of the past nine national championships.
