Spuraways strike gold at provincials

THE West Vancouver Spuraways U17 boys soccer team topped off an impressive undefeated season with a championship win at the Provincial B Cup tournament played July 5-8 in Aldergrove.

THE West Vancouver Spuraways U17 boys soccer team topped off an impressive undefeated season with a championship win at the Provincial B Cup tournament played July 5-8 in Aldergrove.

The team knocked off Victoria's Lakehill Soccer Association 3-0 in the final to claim the provincial title with a perfect 4-0 record at the tournament.

The Spuraways, a team that has remained together through several years of minor soccer, started the year in District 4's U17 Gold division but were bumped up to the U18 Gold group after dominating their opponents in early games. At the higher level the Spuraways still thrived, going 11-0-1 in 12 games to win the league title. They then went on to win the Coastal Cup, beating Surrey district champion Whalley 4-1 in the final to book their spot in the Provincial Cup.

At provincials West Van started with a 9-0 win over the host team from Aldergrove before notching a 3-0 win over the Penticton Pinnacles. In their final group game the Spuraways faced their toughest test of the tournament and came away with a hard fought 1-0 win over the bruising Bulkley Valley Rapids. The win booked their spot in the provincial final, setting the stage for the clinching win over Lakehill. In the Provincial Cup tournament the Spuraways scored 16 goals while allowing none.

The Spuraways weren't the only North Shore team to hit the podium in provincial play - the North Vancouver FC Fury took home silver at the U18 boys Provincial B Cup. The Fury won all of their group games to make the championship game but lost 4-0 to North Delta United in the final.

In other Provincial Cup action the West Van Rangers finished fourth in the girls U16 A Cup tournament while the North Shore Girls Adrenaline placed fourth in the girls U17 B Cup tournament.
