Smith tops Calder Cup win with new contract

THE last couple of months have been highly productive for North Vancouver hockey player Trevor Smith.

In June the forward helped the Norfolk Admirals win the American Hockey League's Calder Cup, tying for the league lead in playoff points as the Admirals knocked off the Toronto Marlies in a four-game sweep in the championship final.

Smith scored five goals and 11 assists in 18 games as the Admirals blasted through the playoffs with only two losses in four rounds of play.

On July 1 Smith scored again, signing a two-way contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 27-year-old spent most of last season with the Admirals, piling up 69 points and a plus-34 rating in 64 games to finish sixth in the league in scoring. He also played 16 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, scoring two goals and three assists.

Smith has played in 23 career NHL games with Tampa Bay and the New York Islanders, scoring three goals and three assists.
