Seymour makes national semis

Host to face rival Langley in Friday night showdown

HOST team Mount Seymour will get another crack at their provincial rivals from Langley in the semifinals of the Canadian Little League Championships Friday night at Chris Zuehlke Memorial Park in North Vancouver.

The two teams met on opening day of the tournament with Langley, the B.C. provincial champs, riding one big inning to a 10-3 win. They'll meet again Friday at 6 p.m. at Zuehlke Park with a berth in the national final on the line. In the other semifinal, Ontario will meet Quebec at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Wednesday was the last day of round robin play and North Van's Mount Seymour knocked off Atlantic team, Sydney Mines Little League from Nova Scotia, 13-3 to notch their third straight win after dropping their first two games of the tournament.

Triston Matthews, Cameron Filippone and Marshall Hogan all hit home runs for Seymour as the team's bats exploded for their biggest offensive output of the tournament to end the game by mercy rule after four innings.

Matthews finished with three hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored while Filippone also ended the day with three RBIs. The win put Seymour at 3-2 after round robin play, good enough for third place. Langley knocked off Prairies team, Calgary's Rocky Mountain Little League, 18-4 Wednesday to clinch second place with a 4-1 record.

Toronto's High Park Little League, representing Ontario, finished on top with a perfect 5-0 mark while team Quebec from Valleyfield placed fourth at 2-3.

Atlantic will play Prairies Friday at noon in the fifth and sixth place game.

The winners of the two semifinals will advance to the championship game scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Zuehlke Park with a berth in the famous Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., on the line. Admission to all games is free. Saturday's final will be broadcast live across Canada on Sportsnet.
