Several North Shore squads take home provincial hardware

NORTH Shore teams in a number of sports travelled around B.C. for provincial championship tournament in early July and many came home with hard-earned medals for their efforts

The West Vancouver Spuraways under17 boys soccer team scored an impressive provincial championship win with a nailbiting 2-1 win over Kamloops in the title game played July 10 in Penticton. The Spuraways held off Kamloops despite playing the final 20 minutes a man down after a red card ejection. Owen Lecky scored the game-winning goal for West Van and finished as the team's leading scorer at the tournament with six goals in three games.

In inline hockey action the North Shore Zulu club sent several teams to the provincial championship tournament held in Victoria the first weekend in July. The club's bantam A, Peewee A and Squirt A teams all came away with gold medals in their respective divisions.

On the rugby pitch the North Shore under16 selects finished second at the provincial championship Rugby Jamboree held July 8-10 at UBC. The North Shore squad won five of their six games to claim silver.

In fastpitch North Vancouver's McCartney Park was the host site for the Midget C girls provincial championships July 8-10 and the North Shore Avalanche battled to second place. The Avalanche fought their way into the final before losing to the Gibsons Crusherz 9-1 in the final.
