THIS month North Vancouver's Filip Peliwo was announced as Tennis Canada's Most Outstanding Junior Male for 2011, his second year in a row to earn that honour.

Peliwo's best results came at the end of 2011 when he advanced to the semifinals of both the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships in Florida and the Pan American ITF Championships in Tulsa. His top junior Grand Slam result was an appearance in the round of 16 at the U.S. Open and he also earned his first professional match win at a Futures tournament in Mississauga.

Peliwo's huge breakthrough came in early 2012 when he won a junior tuneup tournament before the Autstralian Open and proceeded to make it all the way to the junior championship final at the Open.

. . . Emily Overholt of the West Vancouver Otters Swim Club set a new Canadian record in the 200-metre short course butterfly for the 13-14-yearold female age group at the Speedo Western Canadian Championships held last month in Winnipeg.

Overholt, 14, improved her own personal best by nine seconds and finished with a time of 2: 12.12 to break the previous record set in 1998. Overholt was competing in the 15-and-under division at the event and finished second in the 200-m butterfly, second in the 100-m butterfly and third in the 50-m butterfly. Her performance qualified her for the Canadian Olympic trials which will be held March 27-April 1 in Montreal.
