North Shore core helps lead UBC to Canada West basketball title

Thunderbirds ranked No. 2 heading into CIS national championships

The UBC Thunderbirds claimed the Canada West women's basketball title on Saturday with a strong North Shore presence leading the way.

Players Kris Young, Diana Lee, Lauren Seabrook and Stepanie Bell all suited up with assistant coach Jim Day manning the sidelines as the T-Birds scored a thrilling 69-68 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies at War Memorial Gym Saturday. Young, the Canada West MVP, scored the winning hoop with 7.8 seconds left to secure the victory. The Handsworth grad scored 13 of her team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead a T-Bird comeback, finishing of her amazing night with eight rebounds, six assists, three blocks and three steals while playing the entire 40 minutes.

UBC will now head to the CIS women’s basketball Final 8 championship tournament beginning tomorrow at Laval University. The T-Birds are seeded second at the tournament and will face seventh-seeded Ryerson in quarterfinal action Thursday starting at 3 p.m. Pacific time.
