CARY Mans of North Vancouver and Steve Santana and Tim Mason of West Vancouver helped Canada's national lawn bowling team to victory over the United States at the North American Challenge held last month in Victoria.
Seven trophies were up for grabs in the multi-category tournament and Canada swept them all. Santana scored victories in men's singles and triples, Mans in men's triples and fours and Mason in men's singles and doubles.
The North American Challenge, first contested in 1995, is now held every two years with teams of 10 from Canada and the United States squaring off. The host site alternates between the two countries.
According to Bowls Canada, the West Vancouver and North Vancouver Lawn Bowling Clubs both were in the top-3 in Canada in new members added for the past year with 42 members added in West Van and 40 added in North Van. Cosburn Park Lawn Bowling Club in Toronto was first with 44 new members.
The North Van and West Van clubs have been selected as co-hosts for the 2013 Canadian Championships.

The North Shore Winter Club will host a unique new twist on an old Canadian game in February when the first ever B.C. mixed doubles curling championships come to town.
According to Curl B.C., mixed doubles is a fast-paced event that could be included in the Winter Olympics as early as 2018. Mixed doubles teams are made up of one man and one woman and games are played over eight ends as opposed to 10 for the regular game. Each end starts with a stone from each team placed on the centre line. Players then throw rocks with one team member throwing first and last stones and the other player throwing second, third and fourth rocks. Both team members can sweep and the throwing order can be changed from end to end.
The B.C. championship will be decided Feb. 1-3 at the Winter Club. The winner will advance to the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials to be held in Leduc, Alta., from March 14 to 17. The winner of that event will represent Canada at the World Mixed Doubles in Fredericton, N.B., in April 2013.
