Kris Young scores 40 in national quarterfinal win

Handsworth grad sets UBC team record as T-Birds defeat Ryerson

It appears that North Vancouver’s Kris Young isn’t ready for her career with the UBC Thunderbirds women’s basketball team to end just yet.

The Handsworth grad, a fifth-year senior, set a team record with 40 points in a 81-59 win over Ryerson in the quartersfinals of the CIS Final 8 tournament played today at Laval University’s PEPS Gym. Young shot 15-19 from the field, including 5-6 from three, and went 5-6 from the free throw line for an incredibly efficient performance that included six rebounds, two assists and a steal in just 31 minutes of action.

"I had no idea I was getting close to 40 points or the school record, we were all focused on playing well and getting the win today, but getting the record is pretty exciting," said Young in a Laval University Sports release. She surpassed the previous UBC single-game points mark of 39, scored by Lisa Nickle on Feb. 12, 1993 against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Young, recently named the Canada West Player of the Year, got it going early in Thursday’s national quarterfinal, shooting 10-11 in the first half while scoring 26 of the team’s 39 points. In the third quarter Young took her game outside, hitting four three pointers in a row as the T-Birds pulled away.

"Kris is a complete player,” said UBC head coach Deb Huband. “She is a very good defender, rebounder, competitor, and scorer obviously. She is our fifth-year leader on and off the court. She is a three-time All-Canadian and there's a reason for that, and you could see it on display in today's game."

The second-ranked Thunderbirds will now face No. 3 McGill in the first semifinal Saturday at 9 a.m. Pacific. The game will be broadcast live on Sportsnet One.
