WEST Vancouver's Alix Kong helped Team B.C. defend their title against Team U.S.A. in the 2012 North Pacific Junior Girls Team Matches played May 2527 at Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club in Blaine, Wash.
In the two-day competition each match had three points available: one for the front nine, one for the back nine and one for the overall match.
Day 1 was a team best ball format and Kong and playing partner Brooklyn Kraakman of Deroche scored 2.5 points against Gigi Stoll and Jenn Paul to help B.C. build a 12.5-5.5 lead after six matches.
On Day 2 Kong went one better, scoring the maximum three points with playing partner Naomi Ko of Victoria as they topped Kylie Collum and Alexus Song in an alternate shot match. Team B.C.'s 12 golfers, aged 13-17, claimed the title with a 22-14 point advantage through the two days of action. It was the same margin of victory for Team B.C. as last year's tournament win.
This was the 26th instalment of the Canada vs. U.S.A. competition. The 2013 event will be hosted by British Columbia at a site to be determined at a later date.

North Vancouver's Jansen Harkins was recently named co-winner of the 2012 Hockey Now Minor Hockey Player of the Year award.
Harkins, a member of the North Shore Winter Club's bantam AAA team, was chosen second overall by the Prince George Cougars in the 2012 Western Hockey League bantam draft. According to Hockey Now, Harkins scored 83 goals and 153 points in 74 games with the Winterhawks, captaining the team to finals appearances in three high level bantam tournaments, winning in Chilliwack and placing second in Kamloops and St. Albert, Alta.
Harkins is slated to play for the Vancouver Northwest Giants of the B.C. Major Midget League next season, a team that was coached this year by his father, former NHL player Todd Harkins.
Hockey Now is a magazine based in North Vancouver and the award is given annually to a B.C. player who exemplifies sportsmanship, hockey ability and performance and school and community participation.
Previous winners of the award include Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in 2008, Karl Alzner in 2003 and Gilbert Brule in 2002. West Vancouver's Morgan Rielly and Griffin Reinhart were co-winners in 2009. Harkins shares the award with Coquitlam's Mathew Barzal, the first overall selection in the 2012 WHL draft.
