SPRING-LIKE conditions Saturday turned Grouse Mountain's annual Quiksilver Showdown Over the City into a snowboarding sunfest as more than 30 professional riders from across North America competed for kudos and cash.

Vernon native and Whistler resident Jon Versteeg, fresh off a win at the Canadian Slopestyle Championships, claimed top spot on the podium to earn the biggest chunk of the $20,000 prize purse. Darcy Sharpe, a 16-year-old whiz from Comox, finished second while Regina native Craig McMorris took third place.

The Showdown, which also featured an amateur snowboard competition Friday night, was a four-star event (out of six) on the Ticket to Ride World Snowboard Tour.
