Grads rack up NCAA field hockey awards

NORTH Shore field hockey grads made their marks for NCAA Div. 1 teams across the United States this season with several players earning regional all-star and All-American honours

Four players earned All-American honours, led by Princeton's Amanda Bird who earned second-team All-American status while also earning a place on the All-West region first team. Northeastern's Kaela Barker, Iowa's Jess Barnett and Wake Forest's Anna Kozniuk all earned All-American third team while also picking up first-team honours in their respective regions.

Other award winners include Cal-Berkeley's Shannon Elmitt, Stanford's Alexandra McCawley and Iowa's Kim Scraper who were all named to the All-West region's second team and Northeastern's Lizzie Priest who made the All-Northeast region second team.

On top of the regional and All-American honours earned by the players listed above, several North Shore standouts earned awards within their conferences, showing once again the high quality of the players coming out of the West Vancouver Field Hockey Club as well as the North Shore's dominant high school teams.

. . . North Vancouver's Steve Bush and Richard Wooles were both given Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards at the Sport Leadership Awards Gala held in Toronto last month.

The awards recognize coaches whose athletes have excelled at World Championships, Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Special Olympics World Games. Bush was honoured for his work with waterskier Jaret Llewelyn and Wooles for his coaching of cyclist Tara Whitten.

The senior boys soccer team from West Vancouver's Mulgrave School finished second at the provincial A championships held last month in Kelowna, losing 3-0 to Victoria's St. Andrew's in the tournament final.

The Titans went 4-0 in pool play to finish at the top of their group and advance to the semifinals. In the semis Mulgrave took on West Point Grey in a thrilling matchup that was deadlocked 1-1 at the end of regulation time. No goals came in overtime so it came down to a shootout with Mulgrave pulling out the win after four rounds of shooters.

In the final St. Andrew's went up 1-0 early and Mulgrave pushed for an equalizer but came away empty, failing to convert their chances while ringing the post four times. Two late goals sealed the deal for St. Andrew's and left Mulgrave in the silver spot.
