Charity ball hockey tour lets you get in a game on Granville Street

FIVE Hole for Food, a West Vancouver-based non-profit organization, will wrap up their third annual cross-country tour Saturday with a day of ball hockey games on Granville Street in downtown Vancouver.

FIVE Hole for Food, a West Vancouver-based non-profit organization, will wrap up their third annual cross-country tour Saturday with a day of ball hockey games on Granville Street in downtown Vancouver.

The tour was created in 2010 by West Vancouver's Richard Loat as a way to travel the country while raising funds, food and awareness for food banks across Canada.

This year's 13-stop tour started in St. John's on July 3 and will end with dates in Victoria July 20 and Vancouver July 21. By the time Saturday's finale rolls around the crew will have driven approximately 11,000 kilometres in 19 days.

In each stop the crew sets up a drop-in ball hockey game and people are invited to bring a stick and play. Participation is free with the donation of a non-perishable food item.

Last year the tour collected more than 40,000 pounds of food and this year they are aiming to more than double that.

"Our intention in 2011 was to collect 20,000 pounds of food and we ended up more than doubling our goal," stated Loat in a release. "We're upping the ante this year. While our target to bring in 100,000 pounds of food sounds ambitious, I'm confident Canadians will step up to help us help others."

The Vancouver game will run from noon until 6 p.m. Saturday on the 800-block of Granville Street. All ages and skill levels are welcome with all donations going to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. For more information visit www. fiveholeforfood.com.
