Capilano's Kira Sutcliffe named PacWest Player of the Year

Third-year hitter led Blues to second-place finish

Kira Sutcliffe of the Capilano University women’s volleyball team was named PacWest player of the year today after leading the Blues to a second-place finish in regular season play.

The third-year right-side hitter from Osoyoos finished third in the league in total offence and tied for the league lead in total kills with 289 in 89 sets. Her average of 3.25 kills per set placed her fourth in the league and she also finished 14th in the league in blocks with an average of 0.39 per set.

Sutcliffe also earned first-team PacWest all-star status. Capilano third-year setter Sarah Hughes from Burnaby was also honoured, earning a spot on the second all-star team, while middle blocker Danae Shephard made the PacWest all-rookie team.

On the men’s side outside hitter Brendan Cairns from Grande Pointe, Man., was the only Capilano player on the awards sheet, earning a spot on the PacWest all-rookie team.

Both Blues teams are in action at the provincial championships being held this week at Camosun College. On Thursday the sixth-seeded men will take on third-ranked Vancouver Island University in quarterfinal action.

The Blues women earned a bye with their second-place finish and will play in the semifinals on Friday against the winner of Thursday’s matchup of No. 3 VIU vs. No. 6 Douglas College.
