Capilano set to face top-ranked Burnaby Lake in premier rugby playoffs

It wasn't a win for Capilano Rugby Club's elite men's team but it was enough to clinch a playoff spot when they stuck close to Burnaby Lake on April 12 at Klahanie Park, earning a bonus point in a 25-19 loss.

That single point was enough to lock up the fourth and final playoff spot in the CDI Premier League, earning a semifinal berth in the chase for the Rounsefell Cup. What was their prize? A rematch against that same Burnaby Lake squad, the clear-cut favourites to win the title who finished with a 13-1 record in regular season play. Capilano, 7-7 for the season, will head across the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing Saturday to meet the No. 1 seeds.

It'll be a tall order for the Caps. Burnaby Lake outscored their opponents by 302 points this season while Capilano posted only a plus-four points margin in their 14 games. It's not, however, impossible. Capilano was actually the only team to beat Burnaby this season, scoring a 9-3 win on the road back in early November.

Kickoff is Saturday at 2:45 p.m. at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.
