NORTH Vancouver's Lindsey Butterworth won first place at the Sonoma State University Invitational cross-country running meet in Santa Rosa, Calif., on Saturday, continuing an excellent start to her season with the Simon Fraser University Clan.
The third-year runner raced the sixkilometre course in a time of 22: 05.1, beating SFU teammate Sarah Sawatzky to the line by five seconds. Six Clan racers finished in the top seven as SFU ran away with the team title at the NCAA Div. 2 event.
Butterworth's win came one week after she was named the Red Lion Female Athlete of the Week, an award given to the week's top female cross-country runner in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Butterworth earned the award after scoring a 12th-place finish at the University of Washington's Sundodger Invitational. Her time of 21: 45.18 was the fastest for a GNAC athlete in the race.

West Vancouver's Capilano Golf & Country Club finished second in the PGA of British Columbia's first annual rankings for golf courses across the province.
The Stanley Thompson designed course, opened in 1938 in the British Properties, finished behind Vancouver's Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club on the top-20 list. The rankings were compiled through a poll of PGA of British Columbia members. The survey was conducted by Inside Golf Magazine.
"It became clear as we received responses that two clear favourites were emerging and that Shaughnessy and Capilano would battle right down to the final few votes for No. 1," said Inside Golf publisher Jeff Sutherland in a release. "Eventually Shaughnessy would take top honours by the smallest of margins."
