Yoga benefits everyone

Yoga has become an increasingly popular way to improve and maintain your health, even for those who don't exercise regularly.

In Deep Cove, there is a Yoga studio where the tranquility begins before you walk in the door.

One of the first things you notice when you arrive at Maa Yoga, at 489 Dollarton Highway in North Vancouver, is the rainforest surroundings and a view of Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm. The air, scented with sea and cedar refreshes you and helps melt the stresses of your day.

The Yoga space is a mix of warm lighting and discreet natural illumination, spacious and free from distractions. The high ceilings and simple floor plan allow for freedom of movement and concentration. It's a perfect balance of comfort and simplicity.

No one is too out of shape to do yoga. Being in harmony with yourself is not limited to people who are in good shape. With regular practice of yoga, you will experience wellbeing in your body and mind, and develop a positive body consciousness.

Physical well being is the harmonious orchestra of different organs and body parts working together. Yoga exercises include stretching, dynamic aerobic flow of postures, and postures to massage the internal organs and to regulate the flow of blood. Yoga postures give special focus to the spine, which houses the central nervous system, thus carrying the benefits to the level of the mind. Yoga also reduces 'disharmony' in the form of stress and improper posture in the body.

Yoga is helpful in relieving stress and pain, improving breathing, managing weight and improving your circulation.

Your strength, endurance and flexibility will improve and you will feel a greater sense of peace in your life.

You'll feel the benefits of yoga from any amount of time or frequency devoted to the practice. A good beginning is two or three 75 minutes classes per week, gradually building up the duration per day and per week.

Your body may change a lot the first year of yoga and you need to listen and adapt and adjust your practice to work with your body. Ahimsa, the yogic practice of nonviolence, should be adhered to when engaging in the practice of postural yoga. Respect your body's limitations and inner wisdom. If something feels wrong, do not do it, and ask the teacher.

All instructors are Yoga Alliance certified and are driven by a passion to serve and encourage self-love, acceptance, creativity and the release of constricting negative energy and inhibition.

If you're seeking an elegantly simple place to experience the power that comes from the unity of mind, body, spirit and heart that is Yoga, perhaps the time has come for you to explore the nurturing, healing and tranquil refuge waiting for you at Maa.
