WVPD plan holiday's Operation Impact

WEST Vancouver police will be out in force this long weekend scouring the roads for drunk and distracted drivers.

The force will be setting up roadblocks and patrolling thoroughfares throughout the community as part of Operation Impact, a nationwide campaign launched by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police that aims to improve road safety.

Officers will be eyeing drivers closely to ensure they're sober, that they're buckled up and that their eyes are on the road. They will also be on the lookout for signs of aggressive driving and other high-risk behaviour.

The project has the lofty goal of making Canada's roads the safest in the world by 2015.

Two people have been killed and 80 injured in traffic collisions in West Vancouver over the past year, according to the WVPD.
