A West Vancouver Blue Bus driver is recovering from minor injuries after he was reportedly assaulted by a passenger who didnt want to pay.

The suspect tried to board the bus in the 900-block of Marine Drive at about 4 p.m. Monday and refused to pay the fare, according to police.

When the driver ordered him off, the man became upset and allegedly attacked him. Investigators say the assault only stopped when other passengers stood up to intervene and the man left the bus.

Police rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect nearby. The victim was treated in hospital for injuries to his face.

We take things like this very seriously, said Jessica Delaney, a spokeswoman for the District of West Vancouver, which oversees the Blue Bus network. The District's HR department is providing support to the staff person involved.

The suspect, a 47-year-old from Vancouver, was kept in custody until he could appear in North Vancouver provincial court to face assault charges Tuesday.
