Whippets trap dog-sitter in bathroom

POLICE and firefighters were called to a Lynn Valley home Dec. 6 when a woman got trapped in a bathroom by a pair of whippets.

The woman was at the house in the 900-block of Ross Road just after midnight to look after the dogs for a friend when one of the animals reportedly bit her, prompting her to seek refuge and call 9-1-1.

Although not seriously injured, the woman was "certainly worried and scared to go out of the bathroom," said Cpl. Doug Trousdell, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP.

She eventually escaped out of the bathroom window and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

An animal welfare officer for the District of North Vancouver arrived at the house shortly afterwards and confined the two dogs to another area of the home, without further problems.

Jeanine Bratina, spokeswoman for the municipality, said there have been no previous incidents reported involving the whippets.

Whippets, bred as racing dogs, are generally described as having quiet gentle temperaments, although they can sometimes be wary of strangers.
