What's up at council this week? (April 27)

The COVID-19 pandemic may have cancelled almost every event in its path, but for municipal councils, there’s still business left to be done. Two of the three North Shore councils will be holding virtual meetings Monday night.

The COVID-19 pandemic may have cancelled almost every event in its path, but for municipal councils, there’s still business left to be done. Two of the three North Shore councils will be holding virtual meetings Monday night.

West Vancouver

West Vancouver will meet finalize their 2020 budget, bringing with it a two-per cent tax increase.

And council is set to temporarily halt the demolition of a heritage home on Gleneagles Drive in hopes they can negotiate with the owner to agree to save it. The Finqueneisel Summer House was designed in 1938 by architect Theo Komer.

City of North Vancouver

City council has already decided it will hike municipal property taxes by two per cent as part of its 2020 budget. But council has not yet decided how to spread that two-per cent increase between the various property classes (residential, commercial, industrial etc.). Council will debate that and finalize the budget Monday night.

And council wil try to figure out how to get public consultations going again after COVID-19 brougt things to a temporary halt.

Council will also debate motions from Mayor Linda Buchanan on the city’s “collaborative working relationship” with the North Vancouver school district and Coun. Tony Valente on lobbying the province to expand the current tax deferment program.
