What’s up at council this week? Very little.

Because of the Family Day long weekend, none of the three North Shore councils will convene for their regular Monday night meeting.

But the District of North Vancouver is hosting a public hearing Tuesday for a proposal to toughen up some of its bylaws, particularly around pot shops.

Up for debate: Increasing the maximum penalty for anyone convicted under the Offence Act to $10,000, creating a new offence for "breach of land use other than permitted" with a maximum fine of $1,000 and the creation of a new $1,000 fine for growing or dispensing cannabis.

The proposed changes have been in the pipeline since the district started considering what to do with pot dispensaries cropping up without proper permits. Twice now the district has gone to the courts to shut down local pot shops.

The province announced last week that municipalities would be given a veto over any proposed new dispensaries under the new legal marijuana rules. The district has not yet started to discuss what rules any new dispensaries granted a licence will have to follow.
