Jordan Sturdy, MLA-elect for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, said Tuesday (May 21) that he had not yet come to a decision regarding his future as mayor of Pemberton after his election to the provincial legislature on May 14.
We dont get sworn in until sometime next month, Sturdy said when fielding questions from media after Tuesdays Pemberton council meeting. I havent had a chance to discuss it with council yet.
Personnel matters were among the enactments for an in-camera session on Tuesdays council agenda. The B.C. Liberal MLA-elect said that may be an appropriate time to discuss his future with councillors.
It would be legally permissible for Sturdy to hold both the title of mayor and MLA simultaneously, but a decision to resign as mayor could potentially trigger multiple municipal by-elections. The Village of Pemberton did set aside some money in its 2013 budget if one or more by-elections is needed.
